53 years ago, Muhammad Ali was stripped of his heavyweight boxing title for refusing to be inducted into the US Army. Via Marc Lamont Hill: “Ali was unwilling to lend his name to US imperialism. He was willing to sacrifice everything for his faith and his politics. Even though he would never have had to carry a weapon or risk his life on the battlefield —he only had to do boxing exhibitions for publicity— he understood what it meant to publicly challenge an unjust war. We celebrate him now, but we must never forget that Muhammad Ali was an enemy of the State. Let us be unafraid to speak truth to power. History will vindicate us.”
